Solar Car Challenge at Science Mill

Innovation and renewable energy take the spotlight at Science Mill on July 21 as participants in the 2026 Solar Car Challenge make a special stop in Johnson City. Recognized as one of the nation’s premier STEM and renewable energy education programs, the Solar Car Challenge gives visitors the opportunity to see cutting-edge solar-powered vehicles and meet the students who designed and built them.

Founded in 1993, the Solar Car Challenge teaches high school students the skills needed to plan, design, engineer, build, and race roadworthy solar-powered cars. As part of the 2026 Cross-Texas Driving Adventure, teams from across the United States will showcase the vehicles they have spent years developing, demonstrating how science, engineering, teamwork, and alternative energy technologies work together in real-world applications.

Guests can view the solar cars up close, learn about the engineering process behind each vehicle, and interact with the student teams responsible for bringing these innovative projects to life. The program has inspired more than 80,000 students and continues to promote education in engineering, project management, fundraising, logistics, public relations, and renewable energy technology.

The event will take place from 10 am to 5 pm on July 21 at Science Mill, located at 101 South Lady Bird Lane, Johnson City, TX 78636.
