🧐 INTERESTING PEOPLE IN NEW BRAUNFELS HISTORY
Louis Martin: Early Settler, Sheriff & Businessman
One of the earliest German settlers in Texas, Louis (Ludwig) Martin was a New Braunfels pioneer who played a major role in shaping nearby Fredericksburg, Gillespie County, and Mason County.
Born in Germany in 1820, Martin arrived in Texas in 1844 as part of the Adelsverein colonization effort. He first settled in New Braunfels before moving to Fredericksburg, where he became the first sheriff of Gillespie County and later served as District Clerk. In addition to his public service, he was a successful rancher, businessman, and land trader, running a freight business that supplied settlers and military outposts.
In 1853, Martin co-founded Hedwigs Hill, a settlement on the Llano River named after his mother and daughter. He served as Justice of the Peace, was the first postmaster of the town, and later became part of the Mason Minutemen during the Civil War.
Tragically, in 1864, Martin was ambushed and murdered in Eagle Pass while hauling gold hidden beneath a load of bacon to Mexico. His widow recovered his body, and he was later buried in Der Stadt Friedhof in Fredericksburg. His home was later relocated to the National Ranching Heritage Center, preserving his legacy as an early Texas pioneer.
