Big news for the Hill Country: Billy Bob Thornton is coming to Gruene Hall this September, and not just for a sold-out concert. The Oscar-winning actor and frontman of The Boxmasters will be the star of a special United Way Speaker Series on Thursday, September 25.
The event will run from 9 to 11 a.m. inside the legendary dance hall, just hours before The Boxmasters hit the stage that evening.
Guests will get a full breakfast from Gristmill River Restaurant, followed by a one-of-a-kind conversation with Thornton and his bandmates. KNBT/KGNB’s Mattson Rainer will lead the discussion, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at their music, careers, and plenty of stories along the way.
This event is much more than just a fun celebrity talk. The morning benefits United Way of Comal County, which has been supporting local nonprofits for more than 80 years. A portion of the proceeds will also go directly toward helping flood victims in the Hill Country recover after the devastating July storms.
For those who want to get even closer, sponsorships include reserved tables near the stage and a private reception with Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters immediately following the event.
Thornton is best known for his Oscar-winning work on Sling Blade and starring roles in films like Monster’s Ball, Friday Night Lights, and the series Goliath. Right now, he’s taking center stage on the Paramount+ series Landman. But Thornton does more than just acting, he’s also been drumming and singing with The Boxmasters for nearly 20 years.
Formed in 2006, The Boxmasters have released 19 albums and toured extensively across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Their newest album, Pepper Tree Hill, dropped this summer and features collaborations with Herb Alpert and Brad Davis. Their retro-inspired rock and roll mixed with fresh songwriting has earned them a loyal fan base and plenty of buzz on the road.
