7 Things to Do in Johnson City (Day Trip Guide)

One of the great things about living in New Braunfels is that, in addition to all of the cool stuff there is to do in town, we’re also situated near a bunch of other awesome Texas Hill Country towns that are worth a visit. Near the top of that list is Johnson City, a Hill Country gem about an hour from New Braunfels that mixes history, outdoor adventure, and small-town charm.

Whether you’re traveling with kids, friends, or just want a change of pace, Johnson City makes for a perfect day trip.

We’ve put together a short guide with some of the best things to do in Johnson City during your visit.

1. The Science Mill

101 S Ladybird Lane, Johnson City, TX 78636

Start your adventure at the Science Mill, a one-of-a-kind children’s museum housed inside a restored 1880s mill. Inside, you’ll find more than 50 interactive exhibits, including robots, virtual reality, kinetic art, and even a 3D theater. They’re constantly hosting really cool educational events throughout the year, particularly on weekends, so be sure to check out their event calendar to see what’s coming up. It’s the kind of place that sparks curiosity for both kids and adults, making it well worth the trip all on its own.

2. Texas Vintage Motorcycle Museum

100 N Nugent Ave, Johnson City, TX 78636

Right across the street from the Science Mill sits a hidden treasure for gearheads and history buffs alike. The Texas Vintage Motorcycle Museum showcases beautifully restored bikes from the ’50s through the ’70s. Even if you’re not a die-hard rider, the craftsmanship and stories behind these machines make it a fascinating stop. It’s definitely one of the coolest things to do in Johnson City. The museum is open Thursday through Sunday, 11 am–6 pm.

3. Pecan Street Brewing

106 E Pecan Dr, Johnson City, TX 78636

By now, you’ve probably worked up an appetite. Head over to Pecan Street Brewing, a friendly brewpub where the beer is brewed on-site and the menu is stacked with favorites like burgers, salads, brick-oven pizzas, and southern comfort plates. The atmosphere is casual, the crowd is a mix of locals and visitors, and the food pairs perfectly with a cold pint or Texas wine.

4. The Old Lumber Yard

209 E Main St, Johnson City, TX 78636

After lunch, stroll over to The Old Lumber Yard, a former working yard that’s now been transformed into a lively hub of shops, restaurants, and boutiques. The courtyard and stage out back give it a laid-back, community feel. Be sure to check out the antiques, grab a scoop of ice cream, or just let the kids burn off some energy on the playground.

5. Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park

100 Ladybird Lane, Johnson City, TX 78636

History buffs won’t want to miss the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park. This site tells the full story of America’s 36th president, from his early family history to his presidential legacy. The visitor center feels like a mini-museum, packed with exhibits, photographs, and memorabilia. It’s an educational and inspiring stop that gives you a deeper appreciation of Hill Country history.

6. Pedernales Falls State Park

2585 Park Road 6026, Johnson City, TX 78636

If you’ve got time for some outdoor fun, head just outside town to Pedernales Falls State Park. Here, the Pedernales River winds over massive slabs of limestone, creating both tranquil pools and dramatic rapids. Visitors can hike, picnic, camp, mountain bike, or even tube and kayak sections of the river. Just remember—flash floods are a real risk in the Hill Country, so keep an eye on the weather if you’re near the water.
